1.2. What is it?¶
IPv6 addresses are long. That’s why it’s replacing IPv4. But even with all the abbreviating it is difficult to convey through speech. Next time instead of stumbling through a long hexadecimal, tag it and pass along the name. Were you given a name and don’t know what to do with it? Lookup the name to get the IPv6 address that was tagged.
1.3. Why use it?¶
I started using it to make it easier to say IPv6 addresses. Since then I’ve found it also is good for getting insight into the IP address itself.
1.4. What is it not?¶
The tag is not a unique identifier. Tag names are temporary and may be recycled because we’ll run out of names before we run out of IPv6 addresses.
